Cornell Outlasts Women's Tennis, 5-2

March 20, 2022

ALLSTON, Mass. – Wrapping up the weekend competition against the Ivy League, the Boston University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Cornell on Sunday afternoon at Harvard's Murr Center.

The Big Red (4-7) won two of the three doubles matches for the first point and then captured four singles points, including two in three sets, to fend off the Terriers (5-7) and improve to 3-0 this season against the Patriot League following earlier sweeps against Army West Point and Colgate.

Senior Shelly Yaloz and sophomore Kaitlin Tan started things off for BU with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, but Cornell won the other two contests by an identical score of 6-3.

In singles, freshman Michelle Kleynerman dismantled former All-Ivy League honoree Valerie Ho, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles. Freshman Sydney Sharma won a second-set tiebreaker for the other point, as she posted a 6-3, 7-6 victory in the No. 6 slot.

Cornell captured the top two singles points in straight sets. Yaloz won her first set, but Lauren Stein rallied for the 5-7, 6-0, 6-4 decision. Graduate student Emily Kim rallied to force a third set at line 5, but Jenny Wong broke enough for the 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win.

The Terriers will next visit Rhode Island on Saturday (March 26) at 1 p.m.
