Terriers to Take on Merrimack in Hockey East First Round on Wednesday

BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team opens up the Hockey East tournament on Wednesday (Feb. 22) by hosting Merrimack in a first-round match-up.

The Terriers won two of three meetings with the Warriors during the regular season, most recently posting a 4-1 home win on Jan. 27.

A win over Merrimack would send the Terriers to the quarterfinals at second-seeded Vermont on Saturday.

  • BU is tied for the most Hockey East tournament titles with five and has a 25-13 all-time record in the league playoffs.
  • The Terriers are in search of their 12th Hockey East semifinal appearance and are looking to snap a five-game losing skid in the playoffs.

HISTORY WITH MERRIMACK

  • This is the first-ever postseason meeting between BU and Merrimack.
  • The Terriers are 15-3-5 against the Warriors over the last eight seasons, including an 8-1-3 record at Walter Brown Arena and a 6-2-2 mark at Lawler Rink.
  • The Terriers are 10-1-5 in the past 16 meetings.

SCOUTING THE WARRIORS

  • Merrimack ended a 12-game winless streak (0-11-1) with a 3-1 road win at Maine on Saturday to close the regular season.   
  • Senior Katie Kaufman leads the team in points with 22 on 11 goals and 11 assists while sophomore Alexa Pongo has also tallied 11 goals to go along with four assists.
  • Defenders Teghan Inglis (4g, 9a) and Payten Evans (1g, 11a) have added 13 and 12 points, respectively.
  • Merrimack has the second-highest penalty minutes per game average in the nation at 9.56.
  • Freshman Calli Hogarth and senior Emma Gorksi have shared time in goal and Hogarth holds the edge in goals-against average (2.80 - 3.47) and save percentage (.916 - .892).
