Terriers to Open BC Weekend at Home for Annual ChiliFest

BOSTON - The Boston University women's ice hockey team opens up the final month of the regular season with a home-and-home weekend against archrival and 15th-ranked Boston College, beginning on Friday (Feb. 2) at Walter Brown Arena.

Friday is BU's annual ChiliFest with campus dining halls serving free samples of various kinds of chili to compete for the ChiliFest trophy, which is determined by a fan vote. Game time is 6 p.m. 

The rivals will meet in Chestnut Hill on Saturday (Feb. 3) at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on NESN.
 

TERRIER TIDBITS

  • BU is looking to snap a three-game skid and enters the weekend in sixth place in the Hockey East standings.
  • The Terriers are averaging 6.7 shots more per game than their opponents this season. At this time last year, BU had a minus-7.9 shot differential, resulting in a plus-14.3 swing one year later.
  • Senior Lacey Martin leads the team in both goals (12) and points (22) and has a point in four of the past six games.
  • Sophomore Clara Yuhn (7g, 11a) and senior Catherine Foulem (10g, 7a) have added 18 and 17 points, respectively.
  • Graduate student Nadia Mattii (3g, 11a) and sophomore Sydney Healey (7g, 7a) each have 14 points on the year and Healey had a five-game point streak come to an end last weekend.
  • Freshman Alex Law, the runner-up for Hockey East Rookie of the Month in December, has 11 points (2g, 8a) in her past 15 games.
  • Graduate student Alexa Matses (5-7-1, 2.54, .898) and freshman Mari Pietersen (5-2-1, 2.85, .864) shared time in goal for the first three months of the season and junior Callie Shanahan (1-3-1, 2.61, .894) returned from injury earlier this moth and has made five starts.
  • Led by Mattivi and senior Tamara Giaquinto (2g, 9a), BU has five of the top 20 defenders in Hockey East in points.
  • The Terriers are second in Hockey East in penalty kill at 90.6%, which is good for fourth in the nation.
  • The Terriers are also second in the league in faceoff percentage at 54.5%, which ranks 12th in the country.
  • BU, Wisconsin and Ohio State are the only teams in the nation to have five defenders with at least nine points apiece.
     

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

  • Boston College is clinging to the bottom of the national rankings and had a 10-game unbeaten streak (5-0-5) come to an end in a 3-1 home loss at Providence last Saturday.
  • BC stands in second place in the Hockey East standings with 40 points, five points behind first-place UConn.
  • Freshman Sammy Taber leads the Eagles in points (27) and assists (17) and is tied with senior Gaby Roy for the team lead in goals with 10.
  • Graduate student Sammy Smigliani has added 23 points (9g, 14a) as part of a balanced scoring attack with 10 players having 11 or more points.
  • All 10 of Roy's goals have come in Hockey East play.
  • Sophomore Grace Campbell has started all 27 games in goal and has a 2.33 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.
     

SERIES HISTORY VS. BC

  • The Terriers and Eagles have met 69 times since BU became a varsity program in 2005, and BC holds a 37-24-8 advantage in the series.
  • BU is 5-6-1 in the past 12 meetings but the Eagles have gone 5-0-1 in the past six.
  • BU is 11-17-2 at home against the Eagles and 10-16-4 at Conte Forum.

  • After the BC series, the Terriers will turn their focus to a home game against Maine, which will take place next Friday (Feb. 9).
