HOW IT HAPPENED
- On BU's first chance, sophomore Brandon Svoboda's shot generated a rebound for Merrill, who just had to wrist it into an open net to make it 1-0 36 seconds into the game.
- In a callback to the previous night's opening, the Black Bears took mere seconds to answer, scoring on a rebound of their own after an odd-man rush to tie the game at 1-1.
- Maine had more in the tank in the first period, as the Black Bears added on with goals at 11:47 and 12:21 in the frame.
- Following Maine's third goal, BU junior Max Lacroix (33 saves) replaced sophomore goaltender MikhailYegorov (5 saves) in net.
- BU, trailing for the first time during regulation this weekend, struck back with Svoboda's goal in the second.
- Sophomore Cole Hutson flung a puck toward the crease and Svoboda was in front to get his stick on it and redirect the rubber into the net to make it 3-2 Maine.
- Like they had all weekend, Maine found an answer to BU's challenge, this time in the form of leading scorer Justin Poirier, who scooped a puck up and over Lacroix to make it 4-2 Maine at 10:08 in the second period.
- After a misplay on a Maine power play, freshman Jonathan Morello and Bednarik found themselves playing catch on a 2-on-0 opportunity before Bednarik calmly deposited the puck in the back of the net at 11:58 in the frame to cut the deficit to one again.
- The Black Bears just kept pounding away, scoring twice more off shots toward crowds in front of the net in the second.
- BU earned a power play with 1:24 to play in the periodand capitalized as Fondrk zipped a shot from outside the circle past the Maine goaltender, making it 6-4 Maine entering the third.
- Maine went up by three goals just 1:29 into the third period, but then Svoboda lit the lamp for the second time, this time a shorthanded goal at 3:18 in the third.
- The Black Bears would score an empty-net goal with 2:43 remaining to solidify the 8-5 win.
- Svoboda's two assists and four points are both career highs as he recorded his third career multi-point game.
- Hutson is now on a four-game points streak and his 13 points tie him for the lead in Hockey East.
- He has four multi-point games this season and this is the second time this year he's had back-to-back multi-point games.
- BU last scored two shorthanded goals in one game this calendar year — in the 2025 NCAA Regional Semifinal win vs. Ohio State. The previous instance was Feb. 10, 2017.
- Merrill scored his second goal in as many nights.
- Bednarik's goal was his second this season and his second shorthanded goal this season.
- His two shorthanded tallies lead Hockey East.
- BU is now 76-58-14 (.561) all-time against Maine.
- The Terriers will next play a home-and-home series with Merrimack on Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8.
- Friday's game will take place at Agganis Arena with a 7 p.m. puck drop and Saturday's game will be played at Lawler Arena with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
