WEYMOUTH, Mass. – For the first time since 2013, the Boston University women's tennis team took down Boston College in a 4-3 decision on Friday evening at the Weymouth Club.
 
BU set a good foundation for the win when it won the doubles point. Senior Nina Gulbransen and junior Emily Zhao won first at line three, 6-1. BC took the 6-1 win at line two, but BU prevailed. Sophomore Uma Bakaityte and freshman Gabriella Mikaul earned a 6-1 win at the top of the lineup to put BU up 1-0 headed into singles action.
 
The Eagles evened the score 1-1 with a win at line three, but BU got its lead back when freshman Madison Liu won 6-3, 7-6 (4) at line four. BC evened the score at 2-2 when it won at the No. 2 spot. Bakaityte then swung the match back in BU's favor after forcing a third set to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 at the top of the lineup.
 
BC found the equalizing point once again having won in three sets at line six, forcing the match to come down to Zhao at the No. 5 spot. She handily won her first set 6-2 and her BC foe took the second set 7-6 (3). The third set also went to a tiebreaker, in which Zhao went up 5-2. Dimovska of BC pushed ahead 6-5 in the tiebreaker, but Zhao saved a match point to make it six all. The junior then went on to win the next two points to clinch the win for BU with a 7-6 (6) third set victory.
 
The win marks the first time in 12 years that BU has defeated BC. The last time the Terriers won was on April 17, 2013, in a 4-3 outcome when BC was the No. 63 team in the nation.
 
The Terriers play again on Saturday (Feb. 8) when they face Syracuse at the Winchester Tennis Club. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
