HAMILTON — The Boston University women's tennis team advanced to its sixth straight Patriot League Championship with a 4-0 win over Navy on Saturday at the J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts.
No. 2 seed BU (12-8, 6-1 PL) narrowly captured the doubles point, then rattled off three singles wins in straight sets to topple the third-seeded Midshipmen (17-12, 4-2 PL).
At doubles, the third pair of junior
Emily Zhao and senior
Nina Gulbransen kicked off the match with a 6-2 win in 29 minutes, winning 80% of their serve points and breaking twice. The Terriers fell at first doubles, but a comeback 7-5 win at second doubles by sophomore
Blanka DeMicheli and freshman
Madison Liu gave BU the doubles point.
Freshman
Gabriella Mikaul picked up the first win in the singles rounds for the Terriers, cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at line two in just 1:01. Mikaul broke four times and her serve was never broken in her win.
At line one, it was sophomore
Uma Bakaityte who rolled to a victory for BU, dispatching of her opponent 6-2, 6-2 and breaking her opponent six times in the victory. The Kaunas, Lithuania native has not lost more than two games in a set this tournament and improved her singles record to 10-6 during dual matches this season, marking her second-straight 10-win dual season.
Then junior
Rhea Rai picked up a victory at line six, winning 7-5, 6-2 in 1:29 to clinch the match for BU.
With the win, BU advances to play top-seeded Army West Point in the Patriot League final.
This is the sixth straight tournament in which the Terriers have qualified for the Patriot League Championship and their 10
th all-time. A season ago, BU dropped the final 3-4 to Navy.
BU will look to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 20
th time and first since 2023. The Black Knights won the first contest between these two teams this season 4-3, as they had escaped with the doubles point before splitting the singles matches.
The championship match is scheduled for Sunday, April 27 at 12 p.m. at the J.W. Abrahamson Tennis Courts.
