BOSTON - Sophomore Samuel Appiah (Obuasi, Ghana) scored the difference-maker in the 79th minute to push the Boston University men's soccer team (7-5-0) past visiting Penn State (4-6-2), 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

While Penn State was setting up against a BU corner kick, junior Neil Hlavaty (Lombard, Ill.) passed the ball to an unmarked Appiah, who sent a one-touch rocket into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Terriers the win. The Boston University defense stood up for the next 11 minutes, not allowing PSU to take a shot after Appiah's score.

Boston University out-shot Penn State 12-7 and the teams had four corner kicks apiece. The Nittany Lions mustered just two shots on goal for the game. In the two squads' last meeting in 2006, PSU held a 19-5 shot advantage and earned 15 corner kicks. Terrier sophomore Joe Cullaro (New York, N.Y.) made one save in his second straight start. Penn State's Conrad Taylor turned away three shots.

The Terriers struck first in the tenth minute when Appiah sent a ball down the left side of the field to freshman Aaron O'Neal (Virginia Beach, Va.). O'Neal got a foot on it and crossed it to sophomore Shaun Taylor (Sandown, England) who put it in a wide-open right side of the net. The goal stood up until the 67th minute when PSU's Frank Costigliola tipped the ball to Jacobo Vera in the middle of the box. Vera turned and buried a hard shot low right to tie the game at 1-1.

Next up, BU travels to Albany to face the Great Danes at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
