BOSTON - Freshman Emma Clark scored one goal and added an assist as the Boston University women's soccer team exploded for four goals to defeat Stony Brook, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon. With the shutout, the Terriers broke a program record for consecutive shutouts with their fifth straight.
Four different Terriers lit up the scoreboard on Sunday as junior Tiya Gallegos scored the go-ahead goal, while Clark, graduate student Lisa Kevorkian and junior Krista Minto also found the back of the net. It was Minto's first collegiate goal, while Kevorkian tallied her conference-leading eighth of the season.
Additionally, it was BU's highest offensive output since its 4-0 victory over Binghamton last year in the America East championship game.
Freshman Kelly King, junior Alice Binns and freshman Andrea Green all shared time in between the pipes as the trio helped propel BU to its fifth consecutive shutout, breaking the record which had stood for 10 years.
The Terriers and Seawolves came out firing on all cylinders with end-to-end action to start the game. Both teams played at a fast pace, but it was BU who had the chances early on. In what was the best opportunity of the first 15 minutes, Gallegos and junior Jessica Luscinski fired off back-to-back shots on SBU's Chelsea Morales, who made two spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless.
Gallegos broke through in the 30th minute when she went one-on-one with Morales and slotted it into the lower right side for her second goal of the season. Heist assisted on the play with a pass across the top of the 18-yard box that put Gallegos in on a near breakaway.
BU continued to attack and recorded four more shots by the end of the stanza, and maintained the 1-0 edge going into the locker rooms at half time.
In the second half, the flood gates opened and BU scored three additionally goals, beginning with Clark's third of the season as she struck an arching shot to the far left upper corner that was out of reach for Morales. Senior Shauna Kelleher recorded the assist.
Ten minutes later, Clark returned the favor as she sent a header pass that split the SBU defense and connected with Kevorkian, who one-timed it in. In the 73rd minute, Minto capped off the scoring with her first collegiate goal as she headed home a corner kick from Luscinski.
BU will return to action Thursday (Oct. 7) with a 7 p.m. contest at Hartford.
NOTES: Head coach Nancy Feldman is now three victories away from her 200th at Boston University.
