ALLSTON, Mass. - After facing an early deficit, the Boston University men's soccer team rallied with goals by freshmen Cameron Souri and Taylor Washington to earn a 2-1 victory against crosstown rival Harvard on Wednesday night at Soldiers Field Stadium. Snapping an eight-game winless streak on the road against the Crimson dating back to 1994, the Terriers improve to 3-5 on the season.
After Harvard (2-5-1) grabbed the lead at 28:50, BU tied the game 13 minutes later when Souri one-timed a pass from junior Nick Prunier into the net for his second score of the season. Washington added the second goal at 64:28 with assistance from redshirt freshman James Holler to help the Terriers remain perfect against in-state opponents.
BU started the season with a 2-0 victory at Holy Cross and rallied from behind with two goals in the final 15 minutes to pull out a 2-1 victory at Massachusetts. Earning the win in both of those contests, freshman Nick Thomson stopped three shots against the Crimson.
In a contest that went back and forth, Harvard finished with an 11-10 advantage in shot attempts, but BU led in corner kicks, 4-2. More importantly though, after averaging more than 18 fouls a game to start the season, the Terriers only committed five against the Crimson's 12.
Zack Wolfenzon gave Harvard the early score in the 29th minute when he headed in a cross by Ross Friedman from 15 yards out over the outstretched arms of Thomson. Harvard continued to apply pressure with three more shots in the following 10 minutes, but BU's backline held strong.
The Terriers found the equalizer during a counter attack when Prunier maneuvered his way around multiple defenders near the goal line to find Souri in position for his first point since earning America East All-Rookie honors in 2009 with a goal and assist.
BU was the aggressor to start the second with four shot attempts before finding the net again in the 65th minute. Following the goal, the intensity picked up for both squads, as they combined for seven shot attempts in the final 11 minutes.
Thomson stopped shots from Tsiu Moorosi and Kyle Henderson at 84:46 and 85:47, respectively, to preserve the victory. Harvard's Austin Harms and Brett Conrad split net-minding duties and combined for three saves.
With non-conference match-ups remaining at home against Boston College and Providence, the Terriers will first set their sights on the America East by concluding a four-game road trip with a visit to Hartford on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 7 p.m.
