SEATTLE, Wash. - Behind six saves and an own goal, the Boston University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 shutout victory at Washington on Friday night to begin the Husky/Nike Invitational. With their first road win of the season, the Terriers (4-0-1) are off to their best start since 1996 when they began the year 6-0-0.
Washington had a 16-6 advantage in shot attempts, but the Terriers got the lone score in the 47th minute. During a scrum inside the box while being pressured, a Husky was unable to clear the ball and inadvertently put it into Washington's goal.
The 2010 America East Rookie of the Year Kelly King posted five saves for her second consecutive shutout and had help from the defense in the 15th minute when it stopped a header from Washington's Sarah Martinez for the other save of the game.
Washington tried to get on the board before the end of regulation with corner kick attempts at 89:25 and 89:53, but the Terriers' defensive wall held strong and did not allow a shot attempt in the final moments.
The Huskies' Alex Webber led all players with five shots, while Kylie Strom had a team-high two attempts for BU. Both sophomore Madison Clemens and junior Jessica Morrow were able to put one on goal, but Jorde Lafontaine and her backline were able to stop both shots.
Previously earning a 3-0 victory against Washington at Nickerson Field in 2010, the Terriers improve to 2-0 all-time against the Huskies.
They will conclude the Nike Invitational with No. 8 Portland (2-2) on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The Pilots fell in the first game of the day to Seattle, 2-0.
