NEWTON, Mass. - Rachel Blauner tied the game late in the second half but the Boston College women's soccer team took advantage of a fortuitous bounce to claim a 2-1 victory against the Terriers in their season opener on Friday night at the Newton Campus Field.

Avenging last years's 2-1 loss at Nickerson Field, the Eagles improve to 1-0 on the season. Both of BC's strikes were netted by McKenzie Meehan, who totaled seven shots on the night.

Two Terriers played in net on Friday, with Alyssa Parisi making the start and recording two saves and Bridget Conway starting the second half, also collecting two saves. BC's Alexis Bryant made five stops throughout the contest.

Led by excellent defensive efforts by junior Rachel Bloznalis, who stopped several offensive tries, the back line allowed just six of 14 Eagle shots to get to the Terrier keeper.

Boston College netted the first goal of the game in the 16th minute when a saved shot by Parisi hit off of the back of her teammate and trickled to the feel of Meehan, who was able to tip it Parisi's far side to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.

With heavy rains in effect, neither team was able to create a threatening offense and both sides were held scoreless for the ensuing 57 minutes.

Blauner broke the drought when a well developed play went her way. After sending the ball up the right side of the field, freshman McKenna Doyle sent a cross to the left post, which Blauner was able to redirect into the back of the net to even the score at 1-1 in the 72nd minute.

A defensive miscue would ultimately determine the game, however, as a ball that was not properly cleared landed at the feet of Meehan, who took a swipe at it and managed to bounce it off the crossbar and into the net to give Boston College a 2-1 advantage in the 79th minute.

The Terriers brought it into Eagle territory a few times over the course of the final 10 minutes but were unable to create a play at the net and settled for the loss.

The Terriers (0-1) will next visit La Salle on Monday for a 5 p.m. match at McCarthy Stadium.
