BOSTON - The No. 19 Boston University field hockey team will look to continue its strong start on Friday (Aug. 31) when it takes on No. 25 Maine for its home opener at New Balance Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
Friday is National College Colors Day with fans encouraged to participate in a "Rhett Out" by wearing BU gear.
The Terriers (2-0) captured the Wildcat Classic title at UNH last weekend, posting a 4-1 win over Northeastern before blanking the host Wildcats, 4-0, in Sunday's championship game. Maine (1-0) opened its 2018 campaign with a 9-1 home victory over Holy Cross on Aug. 24.
Senior Samantha Wagg tallied a hat trick for the Black Bears against the Crusaders while classmates Casey Crowley (1g, 3a) and Libby Riedl (2g) added five and four points, respectively. Riedl led last year's squad in points (28) and assists (10). Junior Brianna Ricker had a squad-best 10 goals as a sophomore in 2017. Following the graduation of Emma Cochran, England native Mia Borley - a freshman - has taken over the starting goalkeeper role for Maine.
It's been a week of honors for senior co-captain
Ally Hammel, as the Terrier back was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week and the GoTerriers.com Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday before being selected as the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday. Sophomore striker
Ailsa Connolly was tabbed the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. Hammel tallied seven points (2g, 3a) in the Wildcat Classic while Connolly had two goals on just two shots.
Senior goalkeeper
Kathleen Keegan earned the start in both games last weekend and did not allow a goal in 70 minutes of play. Sophomore
Millie Baker made three saves on four shots after coming on at halftime during each contest.
BU and Maine have faced off 36 times with the Terriers holding a commanding 30-6 advantage including wins in the past eight meetings.
