Terrier Twelve - #1: Men's Ice Hockey Wins Hockey East Regular-Season and Tournament Titles, Returns to Frozen Four
August 4, 2023 | General, Men's Ice Hockey
Returning for a 15th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we count down this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.
Coming in at number one in this year's Terrier 12 is the men's ice hockey team, which won both the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles en route to the program's 23rd Frozen Four appearance.
Led by first-year head coach Jay Pandolfo, the Terriers won their 11th Hockey East regular-season crown on the last weekend of the league calendar, earning a 6-4 victory over Providence at Agganis Arena. The top-seeded Terriers then concluded a fantastic year at home with a 7-2 quarterfinal triumph over Vermont to secure their spot at TD Garden. Bolstered by fantastic crowds and tremendous support from the BU Band and BU Dog Pound, the Terriers finished the year with an impressive 14-3-0 record at home, including wins over Boston College, Cornell, Harvard and Notre Dame.
BU completed the Hockey East double in thrilling fashion. One night after freshman Quinn Hutson's overtime goal completed a comeback win over Providence in the semifinals, Quinn's brother and Hockey East Rookie of the Year Lane Hutson scored in overtime to give BU its 10th tournament title with a 3-2 victory over Merrimack. Lane, the Hockey East Tournament MVP, joined classmate Devin Kaplan as well as juniors Drew Commesso and Dylan Peterson on the Hockey East All-Tournament Team.
BU then traveled to Manchester, New Hampshire, for the NCAA Regional. After a convincing 5-1 win over Western Michigan in the opening game of the national tournament, the Terriers defeated the Big Red, 2-1, in the regional final to clinch the program's first Frozen Four berth since 2015. Senior Ethan Phillips proved to be the hero, scoring an insurance goal at 7:27 of the third period to give BU a 2-0 lead. Commesso was voted the regional's Most Outstanding Player while Phillips, Lane Hutson, senior Domenick Fensore and senior Wilmer Skoog were all chosen for the All-Regional Team.
A number of Terriers had breakout seasons, led by Lane Hutson, who was a First Team All-American and earned the Walter Brown Award as the top American-born player in New England. Senior Matt Brown was a Second Team All-American and joined Hutson and Domenick Fensore as Hockey East First Team All-Stars and New England All-Stars. Pandolfo was named Hockey East and New England Coach of the Year after becoming the first head coach in program history to win 20 games in his first season in charge of the Terriers.
