Terrier Twelve - #3: Women’s Ice Hockey Wins First Hockey East Title in Ten Years
August 6, 2025 | General, Women's Ice Hockey
Returning for a 17th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Monday and Wednesday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.
Coming in at number three in this year's Terrier Twelve is women's ice hockey, which claimed its sixth Hockey East title in program history and first since 2015.
BU went 24-12-2 overall, 18-7-2 in Hockey East play in the 2024-25 season. The Terriers had their first season with 20 or more wins since the 2019-20 season and boasted a nine-game unbeaten streak from Oct. 12 through Nov. 8.
In the Hockey East tournament, the Terriers were the No. 2 seed and hosted quarterfinal and semifinal games. BU took down Vermont in the quarterfinals in a 4-3 overtime thriller before besting Boston College 3-2 in double overtime in the semifinals. The championship game against Northeastern also went to overtime with junior Sydney Healey scoring the game-winner to help BU claim the title with a 3-2 win.
Healey was named the Hockey East Tournament MVP and to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team were junior Riley Walsh and senior Callie Shanahan and Tamara Giaquinto.
The Terriers were well represented in postseason accolades, highlighted by senior captain Tamara Giaquinto, who was named the Hockey East Defender of the Year. She captained BU to its first NCAA appearance in 10 years, scoring a career best nine goals and registering 57 blocks. Giaquinto was named a Hockey East First-Team All-Star while Healey was named to the Third-Team, and both were named New England All-Stars by the New England Hockey Writers Association. Head coach Tara Watchorn was named the New England Division I Coach of the Year, becoming the first individual to win the Joe Bertagna Trophy as both a player and a coach.
Of its 24 wins, BU earned five shutouts with three coming from Shannahan and two coming from fellow netminder Mari Pietersen. BU notably shut out Northeastern on Oct. 12, marking the first time BU topped the crosstown rival since 2021.
The Terriers collected nine Hockey East weekly awards and four Hockey East monthly awards during the season, with seven of those awards coming in the month of October. Shannahan, Giaquinto and freshman Lola Reid took home goaltender, defender and rookie of the month honors in October, respectively, creating a near sweep of the monthly awards.
Healey finished the year with 15 goals and 23 points, which led the Terriers in both categories. Senior Christina Vote had the most assists with 19. Four Terriers finished the season +10 or higher, with senior Maggie Hanzel leading the way with a mark of +13.
