Terrier Twelve - #2: Women's Tennis Maintains Excellence in the PL

August 15, 2017

For the 10th straight year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 2 in this year's Terrier Twelve is the women's tennis team capturing its fourth-straight automatic NCAA berth and sophomore Remi Ramos sweeping both Patriot League Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.

Despite losing three valuable seniors to graduation, including Patriot League 25th-anniversary team members Johanna Hyoty and Lauren Davis, the Terriers were able to maintain their level of excellence and retain the Patriot League title with an impressive conference tournament performance.

The season at first looked to be a rebuilding year, as the Terriers edged Navy, 4-3, early in February after beating the Midshipmen three times by a combined score of 15-1 over the previous two years. BU then later suffered its first Patriot League defeat since joining the conference in the summer of 2013 to Army West Point on April 15 by a score of 4-2.

Four-time Patriot League Coach of the Year Lesley Sheehan reshuffled her lineup multiple times during the spring and found the right fit in time for the conference tournament. As the No. 2 seed, the Terriers opened with a 4-0 victory over Loyola Maryland and then dispatched Navy, 4-2, to return to the championship final.

Looking to snap the Terriers' 11-match win streak in conference tournaments, Army captured the doubles point to jump out to a 1-0 lead. BU though battled back and claimed the first four singles points for the program's 17th overall NCAA berth. In total, the Terriers' lineup won 11 of the 12 singles points to become the only team at BU to win the PL title all four years.

Senior Barbara Rodriguez was named the PL tourney MVP after she won all three of her singles matches at line 3 in straight sets. She was also named a PL All-Conference honoree (second team) alongside Ramos (1st) and junior Iryna Kostirko (1st).

Ramos was tabbed the PL Player of the Year after she led the Terriers with 18 singles victories. She added Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades by posting a 3.81 GPA while majoring in business administration and management.

The exciting finish to the season was capped with all nine Terriers earning a spot on the PL Academic Honor Roll. Their success in the classroom led to the squad claiming the athletic department's Team GPA award (3.61 GPA).

The future remains bright for the Terriers, as Sheehan only lost one starter (Madison Craft) to graduation and has a recruiting class ranked No. 10 in TennisRecruiting.com's Mid-Major Poll with three five-star recruits.
