Carl Clem was a four-sport star when he played for Norwood High School. It was there he earned the nickname, "Whitey" for his blond, curly locks.
Apparently four sports was not enough for Clem, as he became a five-sport athlete at BU, lettering in football, hockey, swimming, tennis and track. In all, he earned 12 varsity letters in his time at the University.
It's been said his best sport was football, where he played halfback and defensive back for the Terriers but he excelled in each of the five sports he played.
As a right wing in hockey, Clem was the Terriers' leading scorer during the 1931-32 and 1932-33 seasons. He was also considered one of New England's best divers, while competing in the javelin on the track team and captaining the tennis team. He also served as team captain for football.
Clem was the New England Intercollegiate Singles Champion for two years in tennis, while comprising one half of the Championship Doubles team as well.
Upon graduation, Clem coached hockey and tennis at Watertown H.S. after serving as an officer in the Navy Athletic program at Harvard, University of Maryland and at Sampson, New York. He was also the athletic director at the base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
