A standout hockey player at Boston University, Jack Kelley was selected as an All-East defenseman, was named his team's MVP in 1952, was a member of BU's NCAA tournament teams in 1950 and 1951, and played on the U.S. National Team.

As a hockey coach at Colby College, he posted a seven year record of 89-15-5 and in his final season was named NCAA Coach of the Year, the first "small college" coach so honored.

Appointed BU hockey coach in 1962, he developed four NCAA tournament teams, winning the national championship in 1971 and 1972. His BU teams also captured six Beanpot titles and one Eastern championship, compiling a ten-year record of 206-80-8, for a winning percentage of .720.
 
He then went on to be coach and general manager of the New England Whalers, leading them to a first place finish in their division.
